[Solved] Fedora 18 Troubles – terribly slow

So, I upgraded to Fedora 18 over the night using the yum method (yea, I know it's not recommended but for Fedora 18 I deemed it fastest and safest, I'm not sure if the new installer can do upgrades fine yet). The result was pleasant, a couple of local packages needed rebuild (ffmpegsource, mplayer2, aegisub) due to new ffmpeg, but other than that it seemed fine. I even logged out to load most of the upgraded gui-related stuff and so far so good.

However, after restart, everything login related is slow. The display manager takes 50s to start (with next to no CPU and HDD usage!), the same goes to XFCE start up, the same happens after hitting logout, it takes a really long time for the logout dialog to appear, only to see that I cannot restart, I cannot reboot (these two are greyed out), I cannot sleep nor hibernate (these two buttons aren't preset at all!). The same happens with lightdm as well as kdm, I haven't tried the others yet. Pointers to what might be wrong appreciated, as of now I have no idea whether it could be a config option or a bug and where :(

Thanks to all my kind readers' suggestions in advance. Most of other things (I tried claws and midori so far), works normal, so the system is at least usable when finally loaded.

Solution:
After some more digging, I learned that polkit and upower services weren't running (they failed to start). Reinstalling the relevant packages fixed the issue:
# yum reinstall polkit\* upower
# restart

Hi, I did the upgrade few hours ago from Fedora 17 XFCE x64 (updated) using the FedUp mode and, after the download of about 1300 packets and a reboot, now I have a Fedora 18 XFCE running very fine (no slowness, fast as before, fast boot, fast shutdown, fast windows management, all applications I normally use - like Mozilla Firefox, Filezilla and so on - are OK). Very impressed about the FedUp method.
I have to say that, before launching fedup, I disabled non Fedora / non RPM Fusion repositories (Google and Apple ones), but this just to avoid any trouble.
The only one thing that is not running (I have an error during service's startup) is microcode_ctl service (even if it was upgraded).
Regards, Davide (Italy)

I just updated to Fedora 18 with FedUp, and it went fine. The only problem I've hd so far is that I cannot see how to log out from teh Gnome 3.6 GUI. After some Web searching, I learned that there is no log out option if the computer only has one user account. See the entry for Nov 28, 2012, at http://www.ryanlerch.org/blog/

Hi.

Gnome appears to be significantly slower on my computer too. If I drag a window it takes time to reposition, or if I open a new window, it shows up with a very annoying fade-in effect (obviously it is a bug, not an effect :) ). I`ve installed the proprietary driver for my video card, no difference. It behaves the same way with the basic video driver, nouveau, and NVIDIA`s driver.

In my opinion fedora 18 was not ready to be released as a final version OS. 2 or 3 days before the launch bugzilla was still full with unclosed bug reports about installer crashes, partitioning problems, etc.

Anyway, I`ve filed a bug report about this issue, I hope it will get fixed soon.

I installed from scratch (F18 XFCE beta live usb) and it's fast as hell.

I know it's not as nice as upgrading your running system, but it might help.

@Anon-20:09 CET: This is different issue. "Normal" apps are fast, it's just the log-in/out related thing.

@Anon-21:13 CET: What would help is knowledge of what exactly causes it. As no-one else (so far) reported this issue, it might be either very specific or config related, however if I don't know where to search, I cannot attempt to fix, nor to report a bug.
